This small batch of 8 trays all come from the same board of beautiful Japanese ash, Tamo/タモ.
Constructed using solid wood panels floating in a mitered frame for stability and longevity.
Tamo has a similar grain texture to N. American white ash, but it’s lighter in weight and with a slightly richer color.
Four trays feature a texture made with a Japanese adze (chouna), while the other four feature a scalloped texture made with a round bottom plane. Two of the scalloped trays (#3 and #4) also have diamond shaped patches which I inlayed to cover a couple unsightly knots.
When purchasing select the tray version that you like from the drop down menu above.

Care Notes –
Feel free to use these trays for serving food, tea, or any other snack you prefer. Washing is best done with a light rinse of water followed by a thorough drying with a towel. Leaving water or spills on the wood for extended periods of time may discolor the wood. Hassui Ceramic is quite durable but after many washes, if the surface starts to loose its shine and look dry, you may recoat the surface with an additional coat of Hassui Ceramic. Alternatively a light coat of any food grade curing oil will also suffice (Osmo TopOil, raw tung oil, or unboiled linseed oil are recommended).
About the liquid glass finish –
The wood has been saturated with multiple coats of an extremely durable and water resistant finish commonly used here in Japan on wooden table wares. The finish, composed of silicon molecules in a solvent, soaks into the wood and bonds to the woods fibers at a molecular level producing a hard coating that protects the wood from stains and water penetration. It does not leave a film on the wood surface, producing a very minimal finish that leaves the woods grain and carved textures with a very natural appearance. The finish has been thoroughly tested and approved as a food-safe finish here in Japan, and is used on everything from soup bowls, cups, and plates to full size pieces of furniture.
