The Tansu Cabinet is one part of a series of cabinets designed to stack in a modular arrangement.
Inspired by both traditional Japanese Tansu as well as Ming Dynasty Chinese case pieces. The cabinet is built using traditional Chinese three-way miter joints at each corner, making for a clean transition from the vertical to horizontal elements. The door is composed of relclaimed heart pine tiles, with the grain of the heart pine alternating from horizontal to vertical. A hand planed finish accentuates the reflection of light on the alternating tiles, which changes as one views the cabinet from various angles.
Constructed using solid wood joinery in the form of three-way miters, sliding dovetails, and pegged mortise and tenons. For more detailed images from the construction of this tansu please check out my blog post covering the process.
